President Obama has some good ideas about health care reform, but I don't want to see the government running the show. Who wants all the red tape and higher taxes that would be involved?
One idea that is being used at some companies is to lower employees' insurance premiums based upon them meeting certain health goals-- such as losing a certain percentage of weight, stopping smoking or drinking, or lowering their cholesterol and triglycerides.
The government could take the same idea and offer tax credits for healthier lifestyles. Let's say you go to your doctor and get a complete physical. He offers you advice on how to obtain a healthy weight and offers you treatment to kick the nicotine habit. The doctor documents all this and sends the information to the IRS.
Just before tax time, you get a checkup. Your doctor documents your current health stats and then you file it along with your tax return. Then the IRS gives you tax credit for accomplishing your health goals.
I think a plan like this would be an extra incentive to kick bad habits and learn a healthier lifestyle.
